ECSP Congress

3 – 6 July, Geneva

The European Society of Social Psychiatry hosted their annual Congress in Geneva in July 2018, choosing Kuoni Congress as their principal PCO service provider.

Thanks to the sustainability strategy that is now embedded in the Kuoni Congress workflow, the Geneva team were equipped to assess the environmental and social impact of the Congress, and discuss potential ideas with the client as to how these could be addressed. The European Society were very supportive of this approach, providing input on supplier and service selection.

Both of the caterers “Novae Restauration” and “Trajets Catering” are GRTA certified – a well-known certificate that identifies those suppliers who use local produce from the region of Geneva. GRTA states that participating suppliers must offer a minimum of 3 local products per service.

The strict recycling policy at the University – the venue for the Congress – supported Novae in their use of reusable or compostable materials in its service. Recycling bins were available and clearly indicated to visitors meaning that any waste could be disposed of and sent for recycling. Food waste and compostable cups were collected and transformed into biogas following the event.

Trajets – the caterer for the Congress cocktail – is a social caterer, employing individuals who suffer from psychological difficulties. Apart from their obvious social responsibility policy, Trajets also recognised environmental impacts through collaboration with Kuoni Congress to design a low environmental impact menu, with plenty of vegetarian options. All products containing nuts, dairy, meat and gluten were indicated on the cocktail menus ensuring that the cocktail was easily accessible for all.

Kuoni Congress also collaborated with Eaternity to evaluate the CO2 and water footprint of cocktail pieces, sharing these with guests as an Awareness Raising exercise on the impacts of food choices.

Further actions carried out by the Geneva team at Kuoni Congress included the signing of our Supplier Code of Conduct by all hotels and the ECSP mobile app which discouraged the use of paper at the event. The team also collected the used lanyards from the event for recycling, and organised a “Pedibus” as an alternative form of transport – a group of 30 delegates were guided on foot from the Congress venue to the evening networking cocktail dinner.

The ECSP Congress was successfully third party audited according to the ISO 20121 standard for Sustainable Event Management. The Kuoni Congress Sustainability Team would like to thank all suppliers and colleagues involved in ensuring that the preparation and audit was a success.

Kuoni Congress began its sustainability journey back in early 2016. In June 2018 for the first time, it successfully third party audited its Sustainability Event Management System according to the ISO 20121 framework that has been established in its offices of Barcelona, Copenhagen and Geneva
