ESA Congress

2 – 4 June 2018, Copenhagen

Euroanaeasthesia (ESA) 2018 represents one of the sustainability case studies of Kuoni Congress third party certified ISO 20121 Sustainability Management system.

Once more Kuoni Congress demonstrated its commitment to sustainable sourcing in Copenhagen by achieving 100% signatories on its Supplier Code of Conduct which requires compliance from supply chain in areas such as the Environment, Labour Conditions, Local Sourcing & Benefitting Communities.

Hotels and Restaurants were keen to cooperate with Kuoni Congress in sustainability issues such as Waste Management and Accessibility, producing boundless examples of simple ways in which impact can be reduced at events and in meetings

A Stationary Bar at Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers hotel encourages use on a needs basis, reducing the number of resources used.

Branded Water bottles in the Scandic Hotels further associate the hotel with sustainable actions, and provide a cost effective solution to bottled water at meetings.

Scandic Hotels also reduce waste during refreshments breaks with coffee machines (without individual capsules), sugar cubes (without individual packaging), a selection of tea leaves and biodegradable material for cups and stirrers.

The most significant conclusion for Kuoni Congress during ESA however were the solutions for the management of leftover food following the events. All suppliers were able to monitor and measure the re purposing of any leftover food, usually breaking it down for animal feed and/or biogas, but many suppliers had more elaborate solutions. The Crown Plaza Hotel provide the TreatBox for their guests to take away any food that may not have been consumed during the meeting, and the Hotel Scandic Sydhavn have signed up to the new app “too good to go” which enables surplus meals to be sold at a reduced price.

The recently third party certified ISO 20121 Management System ensures that data is collected from across the Kuoni Congress offices of Barcelona, Geneva and Copenhagen and analysed to identify areas for continual improvement, for example training, communication and supplier collaboration.

Kuoni Congress has recently launched a Best Practice Sustainability Guide for colleagues and suppliers to steward both stakeholder groups towards responsible practices in Event Management. Furthermore an internal monthly forum has also been established to encourage colleagues to share experiences and ideas on how to address their sustainability impacts.

Further activities to share and promote best practice are planned for later in the year.

Kuoni Congress Sustainability Team would like to express their thanks to all clients, suppliers and colleagues involved in the provision of Kuoni Congress services at Euroanaesthesia 2018.

Kuoni Congress began its sustainability journey back in early 2016. The division will address many topics in its commitment to reduce its impact and promote responsible business practice, parts of which coincide with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of :

  1. Quality Education
  2. Decent Work and Economic Growth
  3. Clean Water & Sanitation
  4. Affordable and Clean Energy
  5. Responsible Consumption and Production
  6. Climate Action
  7. Industry Innovation and Infrastructure
