Malmö Sustainability Best Practice Trips

5 – 6 November 2018, Malmö

On 5th and 6th November, 8 colleagues from across the different business segments of Kuoni Destination Management made their way to Sweden for the Malmö Sustainability Best Practice trip, organised in collaboration with Malmö Stad.

As Kuoni Destination Management, the city of Malmö has been carefully addressing sustainability for some time, achieving ISO 20121 certification for the Convention Bureau, and ranking the city at no. 6  in the Global Destination Sustainability Index in 2017.

Kuoni Destination Management has also been following the ISO 20121 framework for Sustainable Event Management in its Kuoni Congress segment for some years, with further sustainability actions planned for the rest of the business in the following year.

The objective of this trip was to encourage Project Manager’s to learn from the endless examples of Sustainability Best Practice available in Malmö, and take these back home to share with colleagues and suppliers in their destinations of Barcelona, Copenhagen, Geneva and Hamburg.

The group visited an impressive list of suppliers that were all relevant to their daily event management tasks – hotels (Clarion, Scandic Triangeln, Malmö Arena), venues (Malmö Live, Turning Torso, Malmö Opera, MalmöMässan), caterers (Mat & Vin I Slottsparken, Malmö Opera Restaurant, Restaurant Cloud), transport (Bergkvara Bus) and activities (Travelshop), each quoting practical examples to explain how they address their impacts to ensure a sustainable service for their clients.

Following the trip colleagues at Kuoni Destination Management participants confirmed that the range of suppliers and the trip in general had provided an effective way for them to learn more about sustainability and how to integrate it into their daily tasks, citing the examples provided by the hotels as the most useful, and the wide variety of sustainable actions presented by the transportation supplier as the most surprising. All Project Managers confirmed that they would recommend such a trip to their peers to learn more about sustainability in event management.

Both Hotels demonstrated a fierce commitment to sustainability.

Scandic Triangeln Hotel offered an accessible coffee break (meat free, gluten free, nut free, dairy free) with no disposable waste

Clarion Hotel engages with guests on food waste in their breakfast buffet

The famous Turning Torso offers a space for events where energy efficiency (among other sustainability issues) has been given the utmost consideration

Malmö Opera was proud to present a range of environmentally friendly and socially responsible actions, including their own beer from bread, and honey produced from their own bee hives!

Caterers Mat & Vin I Slottsparken hosted an entertaining (not to mention delicious) evening cooking class where all participants could take away some sustainable cooking tips to reduce food waste.

Probably the most surprising of all was the presentation by Bergkvara who explained their processes to ensure that their bus service considers sustainability throughout the service – from driving classes to materials, energy and chemicals efficiency and water management.

Kuoni Destination Management would like to thank Malmö Stad and all participating suppliers for the organization of this sustainability trip.

Kuoni Congress began its sustainability journey back in early 2016, following the ISO 20121 certification for Sustainability Event Management System, originally established in the Barcelona, Copenhagen and Geneva offices.

The division addresses many topics in its commitment to reduce its impact and promote responsible business practice, parts of which coincide with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of :

  1. Quality Education
  2. Clean Water & Sanitation
  3. Affordable and Clean Energy
  4. Industry Innovation and Infrastructure
  5. Decent Work and Economic Growth
  6. Responsible Consumption and Production
  7. Climate Action
